Science Space Deep Space Amazon's 180 internet satellites are already too bright. A new study determined 92% of Amazon Leo's satellites may currently impede research. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Amazon is racing to catch up to Starlink in the battle for satellite internet dominance, and it's creating problems for everyone else. Only 180 of the proposed 3,236 Amazon Leo satellites are currently in low Earth orbit, but they're already routinely bright enough to disrupt astronomical research, according to a forthcoming study .


The Exoplanet Citizen Science Pipeline: Human Factors and Machine Learning

We present the progress of work to streamline and simplify the process of exoplanet observation by citizen scientists. International collaborations such as ExoClock and Exoplanet Watch enable citizen scientists to use small telescopes to carry out transit observations. These studies provide essential supports for space missions such as JWST and ARIEL. Contributions include maintenance or recovery of ephemerides, follow up confirmation and transit time variations. Ongoing observation programs benefit from a large pool of observers, with a wide variety of experience levels. Our projects work closely with these communities to streamline their observation pipelines and enable wider participation. Two complementary approaches are taken: Star Guide applies human-centric design and community consultation to identify points of friction within existing systems and provide complementary online tools and resources to reduce barriers to entry to the observing community. Machine Learning is used to accelerate data processing and automate steps which are currently manual, providing a streamlined tool for citizen science and a scalable solution for large-scale archival research.


Conceptual Engineering Using Large Language Models

Conceptual engineering (CE) is a philosophical methodology concerned with the assessment and improvement of concepts [1]. Koch, Löhr and Pinder have surveyed recent work on the theory of CE, discussing different theories defining the targets of CE, i.e., "what conceptual engineers are (or should be) trying to engineer" [2]. In one such theory, Nado proposes as targets classification procedures, defined as abstract'recipes' which sort entities "into an'in'-group and an'out'-group" [3]. Our work builds on Nado's idea by defining a method for implementing classification procedures consistent with this definition. A large language model (LLM) is a probabilistic model trained on a natural language corpus that, given a sequence of tokens from a vocabulary occurring in the corpus, generates a continuation of the input sequence.

Although the IAU has attempted to provide a brief history of the cataloguing of the stars on their website as an accompaniement to the new catalog, the association begins with the western astronomers of the European Renaissance; crediting Johann Bayer's Uranometria atlas of 1603 as the first such popular catalog. This in fact omits the pivotal contributions of a number of medieval scholars to the information science of cataloguing the stars. This manuscript is from the Library of Congress collection, produced ca. The earliest known cataloguer (as opposed to just mapping) of the stars in the West is Hipparchos of Nikaia (c.190-126 BCE). He is credited as the inventor of trigonometry, but also began to measure the night sky using instruments like the dioptra (Gr.διόπτρα, a surveying instrument for the stars) and perhaps the armillary astrolabe.
